Ending uncertainty over their participation in the new parliament, newly elected Members of Parliament from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami were sworn in on Tuesday afternoon.
The MPs took their oaths administered by Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin at the Parliament Building, shortly after noon.
Reversal of Position
This development follows significant ambiguity surrounding Jamaat’s involvement due to disagreements over the Constitution Reform Council. Earlier, Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher, the Naib-e-Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami, had stated that their members would not take the oath if the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) refused to swear in as members of the reform council.
However, following a crucial meeting of the newly elected members at the Parliament complex to discuss the situation, the party leadership decided to proceed with the oath-taking ceremony.
BNP Takes Charge, Tarique Rahman to Become PM
Earlier in the day, at 11:00 AM, the newly elected MPs of the BNP were sworn in. Following their oath, the BNP parliamentary party held a meeting where Tarique Rahman was officially elected as the Parliamentary Leader and the next Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
Landslide Victory and New Roles
The 13th National Parliament election, held on Thursday, February 12, 2026, saw a massive mandate for the BNP-led alliance, which secured 212 seats, marking the party’s sixth time in power.
Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami has emerged as the main opposition party in the 13th Parliament, securing 68 seats. Dr. Shafiqur Rahman is set to become the Leader of the Opposition.
Upcoming Swearing-in and First Session
A special ceremony is scheduled for 4:00 PM today at the South Plaza of the Parliament Building, where President Mohammed Shahabuddin will administer the oath to Tarique Rahman as Prime Minister, along with his new cabinet members. The Cabinet Division will formally announce the distribution of portfolios in the evening.
The first session of the 13th National Parliament is expected to be convened on February 26, 2026.
