BNP Secretary General and candidate for the Thakurgaon-1 constituency, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, has assured that no one will be penalized if they haven’t committed any wrongdoing, regardless of their political affiliation.
Addressing a crowd during his election campaign at Sholtihari Bazar in Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila on Friday afternoon, the BNP leader reached out to local Awami League supporters who may be feeling vulnerable.
On Accountability and Safety
Referring to the departure of the former Prime Minister, Mirza Fakhrul noted that while Sheikh Hasina has moved to India, she left her grassroots workers in a state of uncertainty.
“Our ‘Hasina Apa’ has gone to India. That is fine, but why did she leave her supporters and workers in danger? We want to tell the workers and supporters: do not be afraid. We are by your side. Those who have committed crimes will face justice, but we will not allow any punishment for those who have done no wrong.”
Restoration of Voting Rights
Criticizing the electoral history of the last 15 years, Mirza Fakhrul reminded voters of the “night-time voting” culture of the previous regime. He emphasized that a genuine opportunity for change has finally arrived.
“Could you vote in the last 15 years? You couldn’t. Back then, votes were cast the night before. Now, a real chance has come,” he said, urging the public to exercise their democratic rights.
Focus on Unity and Development
The 78-year-old leader, describing himself as a “son of the soil,” highlighted his long-standing connection with the people of Thakurgaon. He touched upon several key points during his series of street rallies at 11 Mile, Bairagighat, Poisafela, and Munshirhat:
- Religious Harmony: He stressed that Bangladesh belongs to people of all faiths—Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians. He pledged equal security for all and promised to maintain the tradition of communal brotherhood.
- A Proven Track Record: Comparing BNP’s history with other parties like Jamaat-e-Islami, Fakhrul asserted that BNP is the only “tested party” capable of delivering on promises of new schools, roads, hospitals, and employment for the youth.
- Personal Commitment: “I am your brother, your son. I have won and lost from here, but I never left you,” he said, adding that despite his age, he feels young at heart and ready to solve the region’s problems.
Mirza Fakhrul concluded his campaign tour by asking voters to cast their ballots for the ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ (Dhaner Sheesh) to ensure continued development and justice.
