Police have detained a top leader of Jamaat-e-Islami at Saidpur Airport in Nilphamari while he was allegedly carrying a significant amount of cash, just a day before the scheduled elections.
The detainee has been identified as Belal Uddin Pradhan, the Ameer of the Thakurgaon district unit of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Confirming the incident on Wednesday afternoon, Nilphamari Superintendent of Police Sheikh Zahidul Islam stated that Belal Uddin was apprehended around 12:45 PM.
According to the police, the detained leader initially claimed that the cash in his possession amounted to over Tk 50 lakh. However, official counting of the currency has not yet been completed. Police officials mentioned that the money will be counted formally in the presence of witnesses to determine the exact total.
Authorities are currently investigating the source of the funds and the purpose for which they were being transported just prior to the voting day.
