‘Deer’ Symbol for Rani: A Voice for the Marginalized in Rangpur-3 Race

Anowara Islam Rani

In a move that has sparked both hope and excitement among the marginalized communities of Rangpur, Anwara Islam Rani, a prominent third-gender leader, has been officially allocated the ‘Deer’ (Harin) symbol for the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election.

On Wednesday, January 21, Rani received the symbol from the Rangpur District Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner, Mohammad Enamul Ahsan, during a formal ceremony at the District Administration’s conference room. She is contesting the Rangpur-3 (Sadar and City Corporation) seat as an independent candidate.

The Symbolism of the Deer

Addressing the media and a crowd of enthusiastic supporters, Anwara Islam Rani explained the deep significance behind her choice of symbol.

“The deer is a symbol of innocence and peace. For 54 years since independence, the Dalits, Harijans, indigenous people, third-gender individuals, and the physically challenged have remained the most innocent and yet most deprived segments of our society. I am their representative.”

Rani emphasized that her candidacy is not just a personal ambition but a mission to bring the struggles of the “backward” classes to the forefront of national policy. “I want to go to Parliament to be the voice of these marginalized people, to fight for their rights, and to finally secure the dignity they deserve,” she added.

A High-Stakes Contest

The battle for Rangpur-3 is shaping up to be one of the most watched contests in the northern region. Rani faces a field of heavyweights, including:

  • Golam Mohammad Quader (GM Quader) – Jatiya Party Chairman and former Leader of the Opposition.
  • Md Shamsuzzaman Samu – Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
  • Professor Mahbubar Rahman Belal – Jamaat-e-Islami.
  • Amiruzzaman Piyal – Islami Andolan Bangladesh.
  • Abdul Quddus – Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BSD).

Past Resilience

This is Rani’s second consecutive run for the national seat. In the 12th National Election held in 2024, she contested with the ‘Eagle’ symbol. Despite facing significant political machinery, she garnered a staggering 23,339 votes, finishing as the primary challenger to Jatiya Party’s GM Quader. Her strong performance then established her as a serious political force in the region.

Concerns Over Fairness

While expressing her joy over the symbol allocation, Rani also touched upon the electoral atmosphere. She voiced concerns regarding the law and order situation but remained hopeful that the administration would ensure a free and fair environment. She concluded by seeking the prayers and active support of the people of Rangpur.
