Sarjis Alam, the Chief Organizer (Northern Region) of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), stated today that the opportunity to rebuild Bangladesh has emerged for the first time since the country’s independence.
Speaking at a massive public rally organized by the 10-party electoral alliance at the Panchagarh Sugar Mill ground on Friday (January 23), Sarjis Alam—who is contesting the upcoming national election from the Panchagarh-1 (Tetulia-Sadr-Atwari) constituency—urged the public not to squander this historic moment.
“Almighty Allah has given us this chance for the first time since independence. We do not know if such an opportunity will return in the next 50 years. We must not betray this trust,” he told the crowd.
A Two-Step Struggle for a New Bangladesh
Reflecting on the political landscape, Sarjis Alam described the July-August 2024 mass uprising as merely the first step in a larger journey. He framed the upcoming election as the second and most crucial phase in establishing the “desired Bangladesh.”
“This election will determine whether we slide back from ’26 or fight forward from ’26, continuing the momentum of the uprising,” he said.
Warning Against ‘Daytime Patriots’
Sarjis Alam issued a stern warning against opportunistic politicians, extortionists, and those involved in the “business” of filing false cases. He emphasized the need to boycott individuals who maintain a double standard.
- On Crime: “We must boycott those who speak against drugs by day but take a share of the profits at night.”
- On Education: “We must resist those who talk about improving educational institutions but secretly install sycophants to ruin them.”
- On Representation: “Reject those who become ‘people’s friends’ two months before the election but cannot be found with a searchlight for the next four years and ten months.”
He further criticized leaders who send their own children abroad for education while leaving the children of laborers to a life of toil, as well as those who claim to support a neutral administration while influencing it behind the scenes to harass innocent citizens.
Alliance Leadership and Tour Schedule
The rally featured Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, the Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, as the chief guest. Several central and local leaders of the 10-party alliance also addressed the gathering.
The Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami arrived in North Bengal this morning as part of a tour covering eight districts. Following the Panchagarh rally, he is scheduled to hold assemblies in Dinajpur and Thakurgaon today.
Upcoming Schedule:
- Saturday: Dr. Shafiqur Rahman will visit the grave of martyr Abu Sayed in Rangpur to offer prayers, followed by a public meeting. He will then travel through Gaibandha, Bogra, Sirajganj, and Pabna.
- Sunday: Upon returning to Dhaka, he is expected to lead election campaigns in the Dhaka-5, 6, and 7 constituencies starting at 12:00 PM.
