A dramatic clash unfolded in Jessore town on Tuesday when two men publicly fought over a woman, each claiming her as his wife. Police intervened, detaining the two men along with the woman, before a court later ordered all three to jail.
The incident began at Char Khamba Mor around noon, when the two men confronted each other over the 50-year-old woman, a resident of Faridpur Sadar. The altercation continued even after police took them to Kotwali police station, forcing officers to file a case under Section 151 and produce them before court.
According to police and those involved, the woman had lived with her first husband, now 53, for nearly 36 years and together they had two children. However, alleging years of physical and mental abuse, she left that marriage and later married another man, aged 48, with whom she moved to India. The couple recently returned to Jessore and checked into a hotel Monday night, prompting the first husband to confront them the next day.
The second husband told reporters that the marriage was consensual and that the couple intended to live together. The woman herself confirmed this, stating, “I was regularly abused in my first marriage. I will not go back. I chose my new husband willingly.”
Her first husband, however, accused her of breaking their household through an extramarital affair and alleged that she fled with cash and jewelry. “I will bring her back home at any cost,” he said.
Kotwali Police Inspector (Investigation) Kazi Babul said the trio were detained to prevent further disorder. Jessore Court Inspector Roksana Khatun confirmed that Senior Judicial Magistrate Shantanu Kumar Mondal rejected their bail petitions and sent them to jail.
