How Umama Fatema’s Stand Against Injustice Turned into a Campaign for DUCSU

Umama Fatema: A Rebel Voice Rising in DUCSU

Umama Fatema has long been known on campus as a fearless rebel against discrimination, fascism, and injustice. From the days of the July Uprising, she stood on the frontlines, refusing to compromise with authoritarian power or bow to opportunism. Her philosophy has always been simple yet uncompromising: to question authority, expose hypocrisy, and stand firmly beside those who have no voice. This spirit now finds its next chapter as she leads an independent panel in the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election.

Unlike many who became absorbed into traditional politics after the uprising, Umama deliberately chose another path. She walked away from compromised platforms and rejected the privileges often dangled before young leaders. When offered a prestigious U.S. award, she turned it down in solidarity with the people of Palestine, proving that her principles were not for sale. On campus, she is remembered less for slogans and more for her actions: visiting injured students in hospitals, standing by families of martyrs, and launching initiatives such as Empowering Our Fighters to support survivors of state violence. Her lifestyle mirrors her politics — humble, grounded, and unpretentious. Whether traveling by crowded public buses or wearing worn-out sandals, she has never placed herself above the students she represents.

Now, as DUCSU returns to the center of national attention, Umama is redefining what leadership should mean. For her, DUCSU is not a “leader factory” but a body that must address student problems, defend rights, and create space for collective voices. Her panel, Independent Students’ Unity, reflects this philosophy. Comprising diverse, issue-driven candidates, it offers an alternative to the dominance of party-backed groups. If elected, Umama would become only the second woman in history to hold the Vice President’s post in DUCSU — a milestone that would also mark a decisive break from politics of convenience toward politics of conscience.

Umama Fatema’s story is not only about one leader; it is about the possibilities of a new generation that dares to resist, sacrifice, and reimagine democracy on campus and beyond. In her defiance lies the reminder that true leadership is not about power or position, but about standing with people even when it costs the most.
