A tense scene unfolded tonight at Dhanmondi 32 when a crowd assaulted three individuals on suspicion of being activists of the banned Awami League. The incidents occurred between 8:30pm and 9pm, with the victims subsequently taken into custody by police.
Witnesses said the first altercation began when one man was spotted making a video call at the site. People nearby alleged that images of Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman were visible on the recipient’s phone screen. The man was beaten before police intervened and detained him.
Members of the crowd claimed that similar photos were later found on the man’s own phone. They said they had gathered at the area following reports that Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of Sheikh Hasina, had urged Awami League activists to assemble at Dhanmondi 32 — a call they believed could lead to unrest.
Roughly 30 minutes later, two more individuals were attacked at the same location and handed over to police. Onlookers, however, could not provide a clear explanation for the suspicion against them. During the assaults, slogans such as “AL agents beware” and “Zia’s soldiers, unite and fight” were chanted.
Ramna Division Deputy Police Commissioner Masud Alam confirmed that three people are now in custody.
“We will verify the allegations, and if they are innocent, they will be released. If found guilty, legal action will be taken,” he told reporters.
The situation at Dhanmondi 32 remained tense late into the night, with groups of people still positioned in the area.
