In a significant diplomatic development, the Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Tarique Rahman, held a private meeting with Tracy Ann Jacobson, the Acting US Ambassador to Bangladesh, in London during the second week of July.
The meeting was confirmed to a private television channel by BNP’s foreign affairs advisor Humayun Kabir and also verified by the United States Embassy in Dhaka.
Although repeated attempts to reach Humayun Kabir by phone were unsuccessful, UK BNP President MA Malek also confirmed the high-level discussion took place.
Sources familiar with the matter indicate that the closed-door meeting focused on BNP’s political roadmap ahead of the upcoming national elections, as well as its broader vision for governance should the party come to power.
Discussions reportedly included key issues such as:
– BNP’s strategy for restoring democratic processes
– Electoral reform proposals
– The party’s priorities in rebuilding institutions and the economy
The rare one-on-one engagement signals growing international interest in Bangladesh’s evolving political landscape following the July Uprising and the announcement of national elections for February 2026.
The United States has consistently emphasized its support for free, fair, and participatory elections in Bangladesh. Tarique Rahman’s meeting with a top US diplomat—despite being held outside the country—could mark a shift in how international stakeholders are engaging with opposition forces in the lead-up to a potentially volatile election year.
