In Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district, as flash floods and landslides swept away homes on June 30, it wasn’t sirens or state alerts that saved lives — it was a dog’s desperate cry. While the village of Siahi crumbled under the midnight landslide, one alert canine woke its owner, triggering a mass escape that saved 67 people from death.
Twelve homes were wiped out. Survivors, now sheltered in a local temple, are traumatized — some suffering high blood pressure and shock. Government response? ₹10,000 per person, after days of devastation.
So far, 78 lives have been lost across the state since monsoon began. Roads are shut. Villages cut off. And once again, it wasn’t the state that roared in warning — it was a dog, howling alone in the rain.
