Saidur Rahman Sujon, former chairman of Savar’s Birulia Union Parishad, died by suicide while in custody at Dhaka Central Jail on Sunday.
According to prison authorities, Sujon (45) used a towel to hang himself from a window in his cell in the Surjomukhi building around 11 AM. He was rushed to the jail hospital and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at 12:30 PM.
Sujon had been in custody since January 29 in connection with 15 cases, including charges under the 1974 Special Powers Act and cases related to the student-popular uprising. He was previously seen firing at demonstrators during the July Uprising and had long faced allegations of land grabbing and violent dominance in his locality.
Prisons Inspector General Brig. Gen. Syed Mohtaher Hossain confirmed the incident, stating that Sujon appeared depressed. A probe committee will investigate the circumstances of the suicide.
Sujon was arrested from a flat in Dhaka’s Uttara in January after months in hiding following the fall of the Awami League government.
