After three days of demonstrations, students and teachers at Jagannath University (JnU) have called off their protest following government assurances to address their demands. The announcement was made at Kakrail intersection around 8:30 PM by Prof. Rais Uddin, General Secretary of the JnU Teachers’ Association, shortly after a visit from University Grants Commission Chairman Prof. SMA Faiz.
The protests, which began on Wednesday, intensified on Friday afternoon when students initiated a mass hunger strike at 3:30 PM to press their four-point demand. Key among these were increased budget allocations, construction of a temporary residential hall, and the prioritization of a second campus under a fast-track project.
According to sources among the protesters, the government has agreed to increase Jagannath University’s budget allocation to Tk 251 crore and has sanctioned an additional Tk 20 crore for the construction of a temporary residential hall. Furthermore, the construction of a second campus will be prioritized under a fast-track project.
With these assurances, all university activities are set to resume tomorrow, bringing an end to the recent unrest.
