Government Approves One New Police Station, Three New Upazilas

The government has approved the establishment of one new police station and three new upazilas in Chattogram, Cumilla, and Mymensingh as part of its administrative reorganization initiative. With the addition of the new administrative units, Bangladesh will now have 498 upazilas and 640 police stations.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganisation (NICAR), chaired by Chief Adviser Tareq Rahman, at the Secretariat on Tuesday.

New Administrative Units Approved

The meeting approved the creation of Halda Police Station by dividing Hathazari Police Station in Chattogram.

The new police station will comprise five unions:

  • North Madarsha
  • Chikandandi
  • South Madarsha
  • Shikarpur
  • Burishchar

The government also approved the formation of three new upazilas:

  • Fatikchhari North Upazila in Chattogram, comprising six unions from Fatikchhari Upazila.
  • Bangra Upazila in Cumilla, formed by dividing Muradnagar Upazila and incorporating ten unions.
  • South Gafargaon Upazila in Mymensingh, consisting of eight unions currently under Pagla Police Station in Gafargaon Upazila.

Purbachal to Come Under Dhaka District

NICAR also gave final approval to bring the entire Purbachal New Town Project under Dhaka district to eliminate long-standing administrative complexities.

Currently, most of the planned township falls under Rupganj Upazila in Narayanganj, while the remaining portion is located in Kaliganj Upazila of Gazipur. The project has long been managed under multiple administrative jurisdictions, creating complications in public services and governance.

The proposal to place the entire project under Dhaka district was submitted by the Ministry of Housing and Public Works and received approval at the meeting.

DMP Begins Operations in Purbachal

On the same day, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) officially began operations in Purbachal by inaugurating the Barkau Police Camp in Sector-1.

The inauguration was led by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir at the RAJUK Central Mechanical Stack Yard.

Speaking at the event, the IGP said the launch of the police camp marks the formal beginning of DMP operations in Purbachal and represents an important step toward developing the township into a planned, modern, and secure city.

He also announced that the government has taken a policy decision to establish:

  • Four police stations
  • Six investigation centres
  • Two police lines
  • Three deputy commissioner (DC) offices

under DMP in Purbachal. In addition, 41 police boxes are being set up across different sectors of the township to strengthen law enforcement and public safety.

The NICAR meeting was attended by several senior government officials and advisers, including ministers responsible for local government, finance, home affairs, law, commerce, road transport, housing, and public administration, along with the Cabinet Secretary, the Principal Secretary to the Chief Adviser, and secretaries of the relevant ministries.
