In Gaibandha, a son vandalized his father’s grave after receiving a smaller share of the family land. The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 24, around 1:30 PM in Analertari village, Sadar Upazila. Later in the evening, a 48-second video of the vandalism went viral on social media platform Facebook.
In the video, the grave is seen fenced with bamboo poles and plastic nets beside the house. A young man wearing black pants and a floral long-sleeve shirt is seen smashing the grave’s fence with a stick and kicking it, while shouting profanities. After destroying the fence, he eventually calms down.
Locals said that Abdul Mannan Mia, before his death, had divided his 4 bighas of land among his five sons: Jalal Uddin (eldest), Iqbal Mia (second), Rezzak Mia (third), Ejadul Mia (fourth), and Shah Alam Mia Shalu (youngest). Abdul Mannan Mia’s grave falls within the land portion allocated to his second son, Iqbal Mia.
The youngest son, Shah Alam Mia Shalu, claimed that Iqbal received a larger share and demanded the land for himself. Frustrated, he allegedly vandalized his father’s grave around 1:30 PM on Tuesday. Attempts to contact Shah Alam for comment were unsuccessful.
The incident was confirmed by Abdul Hai, member of Ward 3 of Kholahati Union Parishad, who said he visited the site and took steps to resolve the issue, calling the act “extremely regrettable.”
Masum Haqqani, chairman of Kholahati Union Parishad, also confirmed the authenticity of the incident.
