Bangladesh Launches Mandatory Bangla QR System for All Digital Payments

Bangladesh officially launched its mandatory unified Bangla QR payment system on Tuesday, July 1, marking a major step toward a nationwide cashless economy. The new system allows customers to make payments at any merchant using any bank or mobile financial service (MFS) app, eliminating the need for multiple QR codes.

Announcing the initiative during the unveiling of the monetary policy, Bangladesh Bank Governor Mostakur Rahman said the Bangla QR system is expected to transform the country’s digital payment ecosystem.

“If Bangla QR is implemented successfully, it will bring a fundamental change to the entire payment system. Increased cashless transactions will also reduce the cost of printing currency,” the governor said.

He added that the central bank is considering subsidizing transaction costs up to a certain limit to encourage wider adoption of the new payment platform.

One QR for All Payments

Under the Bangla QR system, customers can now use any bank or MFS application to make payments by scanning a single standardized QR code displayed at merchant outlets.

As a result, businesses will no longer need to maintain separate QR codes for different banks or payment service providers, making digital transactions more convenient for both merchants and customers.

Mandatory Nationwide Implementation

In April, Bangladesh Bank issued a circular directing all banks, mobile financial service (MFS) providers, payment service providers (PSPs), and payment system operators (PSOs) to replace their proprietary QR codes with the unified Bangla QR system at every merchant location.

The central bank also instructed all financial institutions to ensure interoperability, allowing seamless transactions across different banks and digital payment platforms.

Additionally, merchants have been directed to display the Bangla QR code prominently so that it is easily visible and accessible to customers.

Penalty for Non-Compliance

Bangladesh Bank has warned that institutions failing to comply with the directive may face fines of up to Tk 3 million (30 lakh).

The introduction of Bangla QR is expected to simplify digital payments, improve interoperability across financial institutions, reduce dependence on cash, and accelerate Bangladesh’s transition toward a more efficient and inclusive digital payment system.
