At Least 7 Police Officers, Including OC, Assaulted by Local Jamaat Activists in Gaibandha

At Gaibandha’s Palashbari Police Station, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sarwar Alam Khan and at least seven police personnel were allegedly attacked by local Jamaat leaders and activists. The incident occurred around 9:30 PM on Wednesday, March 25, inside the police station premises. The injured officers were admitted to the Upazila Health Complex for treatment. Following the incident, a case was filed on Thursday afternoon against nine named individuals, and one youth Jamaat leader, Touhidul Islam Kanon, was arrested by police.

The confrontation reportedly began over ownership of a government-allotted shop in Kalibari Hat, Palashbari town. According to police, youth Jamaat leader Mahmudul Hasan Palash arrived at the police station with a group of followers, demanding the disputed shop be locked immediately.

“When OC Sarwar Alam Khan refused to take such action without proper investigation,
a verbal dispute escalated. The activists then physically attacked the OC,
and when other officers tried to intervene, ASI Ruhul Amin, Russell, Chhanowar,
and four additional officers were also injured.”

Doctors at Palashbari Upazila Health Complex treated the seven injured officers around 10 PM, and 3-4 of them remain under hospital care.

Jamaat activists, however, denied the allegations, claiming:

“Police initially attacked us, resulting in injuries to two of our members.”

Leader Palash alleged:

“The police are now attempting to shift blame onto the activists.”

Meanwhile, Abu Bakkar Siddiq, the Upazila Amir of Jamaat, stated:

“If CCTV footage confirms any party members’ involvement, organizational action will be taken.”

Gaibandha Assistant Superintendent of Police (C-Circle) ABM Rashidul Bari confirmed the case and said operations are ongoing to arrest the remaining suspects involved in the assault.
