A 57-year-old elderly woman has alleged that she was raped by a 60-year-old man, Abdul Gaffar, after he promised to give her Fitra money. Following the allegations, police arrested Abdul Gaffar, a resident of the Jagatpatta area in Melandah Upazila. On Tuesday, 17 March, a court sent the accused to jail.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday around 2:30 pm. After the attack, the victim filed a complaint at the local police station.
According to the complaint, the elderly woman had been surviving on Zakat and Fitra support during the holy month of Ramadan. While collecting Zakat in the area, Gaffar allegedly promised her Fitra money and took her to his house. Taking advantage of the absence of others in the house, he allegedly raped her.
The victim reportedly managed to leave the house and inform her family and neighbours about the incident. Although she initially received local assurances of resolution, no action was taken. After consulting her family, she decided to file a formal police complaint.
Melandah Police Officer-in-Charge Md. Obaidur Rahman said:
“After receiving the written complaint, the accused was arrested yesterday. When produced in court today, the court ordered him to be sent to jail.”
