In a move to restore law and order across the country, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has directed the police to prepare a comprehensive list of extortionists and armed criminals. The Minister announced that a countrywide special operation, starting from the capital, will be launched soon to apprehend those involved in criminal activities.
Salahuddin Ahmed made the announcement on Wednesday following a meeting with senior officials at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) headquarters.
Strengthening Law Enforcement
During the meeting, the Home Minister identified two priority areas for immediate action:
- Extortion and Terrorism: Creating an “impartial and accurate” list of extortionists and armed criminals to bring them under the law. Police have been instructed to remain objective and unbiased during the compilation of this list.
- Institutional Accountability: Addressing the need to move away from individual-centric police operations. Salahuddin Ahmed emphasized that the police force must operate based on institutional systems rather than obeying arbitrary orders from individuals. He noted that while the force’s reputation suffered due to the actions of specific individuals during the previous regime, the goal now is to establish full accountability and responsibility.
Restoring the ‘Chain of Command’
Addressing concerns regarding internal administration, the Minister stressed the importance of a strict “chain of command.” He clarified that while clear communication channels are being established to ensure lower-level officers do not bypass their superiors when contacting the Ministry, senior leadership retains the flexibility to coordinate at any level when necessary.
Measures to Tackle Traffic Congestion
Highlighting the severity of traffic congestion in Dhaka, the Home Minister announced the formation of a special cell tasked with providing actionable recommendations within one week.
The Minister also addressed the proliferation of battery-run rickshaws, stating, “These vehicles are currently operating on major VIP roads where non-motorized transport is prohibited.” He announced a pilot initiative to restrict these vehicles on the VIP route stretching from Uttara, past the airport, and toward the Secretariat.
Salahuddin Ahmed called for public cooperation, urging citizens to follow traffic signals and designated lane rules, emphasizing that lasting solutions require both systemic changes and increased public awareness.
