EC Bans Mobile Phones Within 400 Yards of Polling Stations

Bangladesh Election 2026

The Election Commission (EC) has imposed a strict ban on carrying mobile phones within 400 yards of polling centers for the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election and referendum scheduled for February 12.

The directive was issued via a letter signed by EC Senior Assistant Secretary Md. Shahidul Islam, which has been sent to returning officers across the country.

Limited Exceptions for Security Personnel

According to the EC’s letter, only a few designated individuals will be permitted to carry mobile phones to ensure the smooth technical operation of the polls. These include:

  • The Presiding Officer of the polling station.
  • The Police In-charge.
  • Two members of the Ansar, General Ansar, or VDP who are authorized users of the ‘Election Protection 2026’ application.

“To Control Social Media”

Explaining the rationale behind the decision, Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud told reporters that the measure is primarily intended to maintain the sanctity of the voting process and prevent unauthorized digital interference.

“If hundreds of people enter the center with cameras and mobile phones—whether they are agents or voters—it will create immense trouble for us,” said Abdur Rahmanel Masud.

When asked about the inconvenience to voters who might have to remain without their phones for several hours while waiting in line, the Commissioner admitted it was a difficult decision. “I have thought about this question myself. But in the end, we have decided that phones cannot be taken into the voting procedure. We recognize it is a part of our lives, but just as people cannot take phones into an examination hall, they cannot take them here.”

The Commissioner further clarified that the ban is a preemptive strike against the potential misuse of social media. “We have done this out of fear of social media—to control what I otherwise cannot control. If someone brings a phone by mistake, they must leave it with the Presiding Officer before entering the booth to cast their vote.”

The 13th National Parliamentary Election is set to take place this Thursday, with security measures being tightened nationwide to ensure a peaceful environment.
