‘Alternatives’ Launches with Dialogue on Post-July Bangladesh

Alternatives Platform Bangladesh

‘Alternatives’, a new political dialogue-based platform, officially commenced its journey today with a discussion titled “Post-July Bangladesh: Our Failures and the Direction of a New Day.” The event, held at the Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium of Dhaka University at 10:30 AM, focused on listening to and understanding the questions and aspirations of the public.

Old Systems in New Guises, Says Mahfuj Alam

The keynote speech was delivered by Mahfuj Alam, a former adviser to the interim government. In his address, he emphasized that while the July mass uprising provided a historic opportunity to reform the political and economic structure of the state, most of that potential remains unfulfilled.

“The July mass uprising brought an opportunity to break the culture of inequality and oppression,” Mahfuj Alam stated. “However, apart from some partial reforms, the desired change has not been implemented. Instead, we are seeing the old arrangements return in new forms.”

He provided a detailed analysis of the state’s failures following the revolution, citing a lack of:

  • Clear objectives and structural leadership.
  • Accountable relationships between the state and its citizens.
  • Effective reform in the police and administrative structures.

A Crisis of Uncertainty

The keynote highlighted that the continuation of discrimination, a collapsing education system, and a severe employment crisis have created deep uncertainty regarding the country’s future. Mahfuj Alam called for continuous dialogue with the public, self-criticism, and broader social-political solidarity to overcome these hurdles. He stressed the importance of prioritizing the economic liberation of laborers, farmers, and marginalized communities.

The Vision of ‘Alternatives’

The organizers described Alternatives as a political dialogue-based platform designed to bridge the gap between different social strata. Its mission is to listen to the people’s questions and use those experiences to build new political and social thoughts.

Interactive Dialogue and Questioning

Following the keynote, an interactive Q&A session was moderated by Dr. Tajnuva Jabeen. Panelists included:

  • Rezwan Ahmed Rifat
  • Mohidul Islam Daud
  • Jahin Faruk Amin
  • Mahfuj Alam

The discussion focused on why those who participated in the July uprising have struggled to achieve expected political success and how to restore public trust to form a new type of political solidarity. Guests included community leaders, student representatives, intellectuals, and labor leaders.

Call for a New Political Platform

In the closing remarks, organizers Emon Syed and Abdullah Mehedi Dipto called for the creation of a new political platform through continuous engagement with all sections of society. They emphasized that the journey of Alternatives is rooted in the belief that the experience and questions of the people must be at the center of any political initiative.
