A cloud of heavy grief and mourning has descended upon the home of Chanchal Chandra Bhowmik, a 23-year-old youth who was brutally burned to death while sleeping in a motorcycle garage in Narsingdi. Since the news broke, people from far and wide have been flocking to his village home in Lakshmipur, Barura Upazila, Cumilla, to offer their condolences to the shattered family.
On Sunday (January 25), a somber atmosphere prevailed at the Bhowmik residence in Lakshmipur. Chanchal’s mother sat motionless, paralyzed by grief, while his physically challenged elder brother and ailing second brother remained speechless. The family, which relied entirely on Chanchal’s income, now faces an uncertain and dark future.
Chanchal was the youngest son of the late Khokon Chandra Bhowmik. Following his father’s death three years ago, the responsibility of the entire household fell on his shoulders. With one brother disabled and the other suffering from long-term illness, Chanchal was the sole hope for his mother and siblings.
“My nephew went to Narsingdi about seven years ago to learn work at a motorcycle garage,” said Duryodhan Bhowmik, Chanchal’s uncle. “He was a regular worker and visited home frequently. We never heard of him having any trouble with anyone. Upon hearing about the fire, we rushed there that night only to find his charred body after the flames were doused. We want justice for this cold-blooded murder.”
The Incident
The tragic event occurred late Friday night (January 23) at a motorcycle garage in the Khanabari Mosque Market area, near the Narsingdi Police Lines. According to police and local sources, Chanchal had fallen asleep inside the garage after a day’s work.
Reports suggest that miscreants deliberately set fire to the garage by pouring petrol under the shutter. Due to the presence of petrol and lubricants inside the shop, the fire spread instantly, trapping Chanchal inside. He died on the spot from severe burns.
Narsingdi Model Police Station officials stated that CCTV footage from the area is being analyzed. Initial observations show a suspicious individual moving near the garage before the fire broke out. The body was handed over to the family for cremation following an autopsy on Saturday.
The brutal nature of the killing has sparked outrage in the local community, with many demanding the immediate identification and arrest of those involved in what they describe as a “premeditated murder.”
