Election Campaign Kicks Off: Zonayed Saki Calls for ‘Yes’ Vote in Referendum to Fulfill Martyrs’ Aspirations

Zonayed Saki

The official campaign for the 13th National Parliamentary Election and the Constitutional Reform Council began today across the country. In Brahmanbaria-6 (Bancharampur), Zonayed Saki, Chief Coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolan and the candidate of the simultaneous movement supported by the BNP, launched his formal campaign from Charlahania village.

Addressing a prayer gathering (doa mahfil) before starting his house-to-house campaign, the prominent political leader emphasized that this election is not merely a race for seats but a pivotal step toward a “democratic transformation” of the state.

Referendum on the ‘July National Charter’

Highlighting the unique nature of this election, where a national referendum is being held concurrently with the parliamentary polls, Zonayed Saki urged citizens to cast a ‘Yes’ vote for the July National Charter.

“We will vote ‘Yes’ for the July National Charter, born from the blood-soaked mass uprising. This is essential to fulfill the aspirations of our martyrs and empower the next parliament to carry out fundamental constitutional reforms based on this charter,” said Zonayed Saki.

He further clarified that the upcoming National Parliament will also function as a Constitutional Reform Council, tasked with establishing a new political settlement that ensures government accountability and a balance of power.

Remembering the Martyrs of Bancharampur

Zonayed Saki paid solemn tribute to those who sacrificed their lives during the long struggle against fascism. He specifically mentioned Rafiqul Islam Noyan, a BNP activist from Bancharampur, and other local martyrs of the July-August uprising, including Md. Tuhin Ahmed, Md. Imran, Md. Ismail Sarker, and Ashikur Rahman.

“Our formal campaign begins by seeking the blessings of the Almighty for our martyrs. Their sacrifice has paved the way for the democratic system we seek today,” he added.

A New Political Settlement

The candidate, contesting with the ‘Mathal’ symbol as a Ganosamhati Andolan nominee with BNP support, criticized the previous “fascist regime” for stripping away voting rights since 2011. He recalled the systemic torture, enforced disappearances, and the “Ayayna Ghor” used to suppress the opposition. He also noted how former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia was denied medical treatment, pushing her toward a critical state.

Zonayed Saki concluded by stating that his goal is to build a Bangladesh where farmers, workers, women, and people of all ethnicities and religions can live with dignity and equal rights.
