The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today announced the party’s commitment to building a unified and inclusive “Rainbow Nation” that incorporates all ethnic communities in Bangladesh.
Mirza Fakhrul made the commitment while addressing the main cultural festival of the Garo ethnic community, ‘Wangala,’ held at the Banani Bidyabitan School and College grounds in Dhaka. He stated that the concept of a “Rainbow Nation” is a core element of the 31-point future program recently unveiled by the party’s Acting Chairman, Tarique Rahman.
“Every community in Bangladesh—be it Bangali, Garo, or any other smaller ethnic group—is a citizen of this country,” the BNP Secretary General said. He highlighted that the party’s founding principle stems from the late President Ziaur Rahman’s vision of “Bangladeshi Nationalism,” which sought to unite people of all faiths and origins under a single national identity.
Mirza Fakhrul further recalled that the party’s Chairperson, Khaleda Zia, had previously announced the formation of a separate directorate dedicated to protecting the culture and heritage of minority ethnic groups.
Outlining future policy proposals, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated that if the BNP returns to power, they would consider establishing a dedicated cultural academy in Dhaka and officially recognize and sponsor the annual festivals of all ethnic communities.
He expressed his delight and pride at joining the Wangala festival, stating that the Garo community’s vibrant traditions enrich Bangladesh’s national culture. He also noted his long-standing, close relationship with various ethnic groups across the country, having personally witnessed their issues, needs, culture, and productivity, particularly among the Garo community in Mymensingh.
