Ban on Awami League Not Lifting Anytime Soon: Legal Adviser

Government Legal Adviser Asif Nazrul

The government’s legal adviser, Asif Nazrul, has ruled out any immediate possibility of lifting the ban on the Awami League’s political activities, stating that steps have even been taken to seek justice against the party at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday afternoon after visiting the Shankar Math Durga Puja pavilion in Barishal city, Asif Nazrul said, “The Hindu community of Bangladesh is celebrating the Sharadiya Durga festival in a peaceful environment. Despite conspiracies from certain quarters, the government has remained vigilant.”

He also warned that those attempting to destabilize the Chittagong Hill Tracts would face stern action.

Responding to questions about recent remarks by the Chief Adviser to foreign journalists regarding the ban, Nazrul clarified that the comments were merely “theoretical discussions.” He added, “Not before the upcoming elections, nor in the near future, is there any possibility of lifting this ban.”

The ban on the Awami League was imposed in the aftermath of widespread violence, allegations of crimes against humanity, and public unrest following last year’s student-led uprising.
