Silent consent to harm Mahfuj Alam inside advisory council, says Nahid Islam

Mahfuj Alam attack, Nahid Islam statement

National Citizen Party convener Nahid Islam on Saturday accused members of the interim government and its advisory council of creating a “silent consensus” to humiliate and even kill Information and Broadcasting Adviser Mahfuj Alam. In a post on his verified Facebook account, Nahid said repeated attacks on Mahfuj Alam abroad show he is being singled out, and warned that other opposition and movement figures could be targeted next.

Nahid wrote that Mahfuj Alam narrowly escaped an attempted attack in London and that earlier incidents in the United States and elsewhere had put the adviser’s life at risk. He alleged the assaults were carried out by “Awami fascists” who view Mahfuj Alam as a primary target.

“Repeated attacks on Mahfuj Alam are happening because Mahfuj Alam himself is the target. In the next phase each one of us will be targeted. We know what awaits us,” Nahid wrote, referring to what he described as the regime’s growing brutality and pointing to Gopalganj as an example of harsh reprisals. He added that those who cultivate a silent consensus to attack Mahfuj Alam “will also suffer.”

Nahid also criticised what he described as a shift by some groups toward “reactionary and revengeful politics” in the name of opposing fascism, which he warned could usher in a return of authoritarian forces. He said Mahfuj Alam had been advocating for post-uprising inclusion, responsibility and compassion — positions Nahid argued the country has not followed.

In his post Nahid accused the interim government and some advisers of failing to take strong action after earlier attacks on Mahfuj Alam. “There was never any strong step, no strong message, not even a comment from any adviser or press secretary,” he wrote, and claimed that an atmosphere of tacit acceptance of violence is being allowed to grow within the corridors of power.

The convener framed his comments as a broader political warning: those inside the advisory council who cultivate division and vindictiveness will ultimately be held politically accountable, he said. Nahid added that “time will prove Mahfuj Alam right, if he lives long enough to see it.”

Background: Mahfuj Alam, an activist turned adviser in the interim administration, has been the subject of protests and confrontations abroad in recent weeks, and civil society groups have condemned a reported assault on him in New York. Several organisations and student groups have issued statements calling for protection of political activists and accountability for attacks.
