“Game Over for Conspirators”: Press Secretary Confirms Historic Yunus–Tarique Meeting in London

The Chief Adviser’s recent visit to the United Kingdom has produced significant outcomes both politically and diplomatically, according to Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser. In a statement issued Saturday, Alam described the four-day tour as a “historic success,” highlighting a range of achievements including royal recognition, anti-corruption breakthroughs, and most notably, a meeting between Professor Muhammad Yunus and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.Terming the meeting “historic,” Alam said it signaled the end of conspiracies aimed at sidelining the country’s largest political party. The two leaders reportedly agreed to hold the long-awaited national election in early February 2026—a compromise following BNP’s earlier demand for a December 2025 poll and the interim government’s prior suggestion of April 2026. Alam claimed the agreement marks a turning point in restoring political stability and inclusiveness. The Press Secretary also noted that Yunus received a prestigious award from King Charles, along with a 30-minute one-on-one audience with the monarch, as recognition of Bangladesh’s democratic transformation since the July Uprising. He further announced that the UK’s National Crime Agency had frozen 320 properties worth £170 million linked to a close aide of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, calling it the agency’s largest such action to date.Alam said the visit included meetings between Bangladeshi and British officials to strengthen cooperation on asset recovery, and hinted at renewed hope on the Rohingya issue. He framed the trip as a demonstration of the interim government’s seriousness about reform and its growing international credibility.
