A clash between Dhaka University (DU) students and intern doctors at Dhaka Medical College (DMCH) Hospital has sparked a 24-hour strike by the Intern Doctors’ Society and prompted hospital authorities to form a six-member investigation committee.
The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon (April 8) when a DU student, seeking urgent medical care, allegedly disagreed with the prescription given by an intern doctor. The disagreement escalated into a heated argument and eventually a physical altercation between the student and the intern doctors.
In response, the hospital director, Brigadier General Md. Asaduzzaman, formed a six-member investigation committee, which has been instructed to submit its report by July 11, 2026.
Meanwhile, the Intern Doctors’ Society, in a briefing held at 2:00 am on Wednesday, announced a 24-hour work stoppage to protest the incident. The organization issued four demands:
- Identification and punishment of those responsible within 24 hours
- Deployment of armed police to strengthen hospital security
- Strict action against the accused
- Nationwide strike by intern doctors if justice is not served within the stipulated time
The incident has raised concerns over hospital security and patient-doctor interactions, prompting authorities to take immediate action.
