Police have arrested Mufti Mamunur Rashid Kasemi, founder of the Shariah-based marriage consultancy platform Ideal Marriage Bureau, in a case filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. He was detained from his residence in the Atibazar area of Keraniganj around 3 pm on Sunday.
The case was filed by Kasemi’s wife on Friday at Keraniganj Police Station, confirmed Tarikul Islam, Additional Superintendent of Dhaka District Police.
“His wife lodged a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. He has been arrested today in connection with that case,” the police official told The Business Standard.
Following the arrest, Kasemi was transferred from Keraniganj Police custody and sent to court for legal proceedings.
Kasemi, known publicly for promoting “Shariah-based marriage consultancy,” now faces legal scrutiny over allegations of domestic violence within his own household—an irony not lost on many observers.
