“We Don’t Make False Promises Like the Old Politicians”: Nahid Islam at Manikganj Rally

Addressing a public rally in Manikganj, National Citizen Party (NCP) Convenor Nahid Islam declared that the NCP would not follow the path of traditional politics built on hollow promises. “We are not here to offer false hopes like the old generation of politicians. We know what the people want, and we have brought those core issues to the forefront,” he said.

Nahid emphasized that the party is envisioning a new Bangladesh where absolute power does not lie in the hands of one individual. “We don’t want a state where the Prime Minister remains unaccountable and unchecked. We want a democratic structure that ensures balance and scrutiny.”

Speaking on the political transition after the July Uprising, he said, “Many united to bring down Sheikh Hasina, but not all were committed to building a truly new state. Some merely wanted to seize power within the same old framework. That’s not our path. That’s why we had to form a new political party.”

He reaffirmed the NCP’s call for elections only after justice and reforms, stating, “Holding elections is not enough. We demand justice for the crimes committed and a restructured political system that can uphold true democracy.”

Referring to Manikganj’s historical significance, Nahid said, “On August 4th, Manikganj was liberated from Awami League’s grip. In 1971, on December 13th, it was freed from the Pakistani army. Yet, in terms of development, Manikganj remains neglected. We are here to speak for the transformation of this long-ignored region.”

He acknowledged local demands such as embankments, bridges, and road infrastructure, but maintained a grounded tone: “Yes, we have heard your demands. But we are not going to claim that a five-month-old party like the NCP can solve every problem overnight. We are not here to lie like the old, tired politicians.”

On structural reform, Nahid reiterated NCP’s proposal for a bicameral parliament, with an upper house elected through proportional representation. “This will ensure a balance of power, preventing authoritarianism. Even the Prime Minister will have to be answerable.”

Ending his speech, he turned to the crowd and said, “There’s no one in this state to ensure our safety—except you. It is with your trust and your strength that we walk the streets. You are our only security.”
