Historic Win for Bangladesh Women’s Hockey Team in Asian Games Qualifiers

The Bangladesh women’s hockey team has secured a historic first-ever international victory, defeating Uzbekistan 3-2 in their second match of the Asian Games qualifiers on Friday (April 24).

After beginning their campaign with an exciting 5-5 draw against Chinese Taipei on Thursday (April 23), the red and green representatives bounced back strongly to register this landmark win. With one win and one draw, Bangladesh now sits at the top of Group ‘A’ with 4 points, while Uzbekistan holds second place with 3 points. Bangladesh will face Hong Kong in their third group match on Sunday.

The match, held at the GBK Hockey Field in Jakarta, Indonesia, saw Bangladesh take an early lead in the 11th minute, as Sharika Safa scored from a penalty corner. However, Uzbekistan quickly responded, equalizing just a minute later to end the first quarter at 1-1.

Bangladesh dominated the second quarter with continuous attacks, and their efforts paid off when Kona Akter restored the lead in the 24th minute. The momentum continued into the third quarter, where Irene Akter successfully converted another penalty corner in the 40th minute, extending the lead to 3-1.

Uzbekistan attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring from a penalty stroke in the 46th minute to make it 3-2. Despite the pressure, Bangladesh held firm and ensured there were no further goals, sealing a memorable victory.

This win marks a milestone achievement for Bangladesh women’s hockey, as they make a strong statement in their debut international campaign.
