A journalist was brutally hacked and his throat slit in broad daylight inside a market in Gazipur’s Chandna Chowrasta area on Thursday evening, allegedly for filming an earlier knife attack. Police have detained five individuals for questioning in connection with the killing.
The victim, Asaduzzaman Tuhin, 38, was a staff reporter for Dainik Protidiner Kagoj in Gazipur.
According to Shahin Khan, Officer-in-Charge of Gazipur Metropolitan Police’s (GMP) Basan Police Station, two separate cases have been filed over the incidents. One case was lodged by Tuhin’s elder brother, Md Selim, and the other by the brother of Badsha Mia, who was injured in the earlier attack.
“Five individuals have been detained for questioning. If their involvement is confirmed, they will be formally shown arrested,” said OC Khan.
The Incident
Police and locals said Tuhin’s office was located inside Mosque Market in Chandna Chowrasta. On Thursday evening, an argument broke out between a woman and Badsha Mia, during which several armed men attacked Badsha with sharp weapons and chased him. Tuhin reportedly began filming the assault on his mobile phone.
When the attackers noticed he was recording, they pursued him. Tuhin sought shelter in a tea stall beneath his office, but the assailants dragged him outside, hacked him repeatedly, and slit his throat before fleeing.
Police later recovered his body and sent it to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for autopsy. CCTV footage from the area has been collected.
CCTV Revelations
One video shows a crowded spot inside Mosque Market where a man appears to shove a woman, triggering a group of 4–5 armed men to attack him with machetes, large knives, and locally made weapons. As the man ran, the assailants gave chase.
GMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (Crime–North) Rabiul Islam said initial intelligence suggests the attack was premeditated, with a woman used to provoke an altercation before the armed assault.
“The footage shows a woman in black walking at 6:58 p.m., followed by a man in a blue shirt who grabs her from behind. After a brief confrontation, several youths with sharp weapons appear and attack the man. Tuhin recorded this chase on his phone. The killing appears to have been triggered by his filming,” ADC Islam said.
He added that the suspects have been identified but their names are being withheld for investigative reasons.
Eyewitness Account
Shamim Hossain, a colleague of Tuhin, said the journalist had called him minutes before the attack. “Soon after, I saw a group chasing a man. Tuhin took out his phone to record it and ran after them. The attackers saw him, chased him into a tea stall, and killed him inside. I tried to find a police vehicle nearby but couldn’t. I called the OC directly, and police arrived later,” Shamim said.
Locals Link Suspects to Mugging Gang
Residents allege the suspects seen in the footage are members of a local mugging ring, with the woman also part of the group.
The earlier victim, Badsha Mia, now under treatment in hospital, claims, “The women are part of a gang. They took 30,000 taka from me. I didn’t know them before.”
Family’s Plea for Justice
At the hospital morgue on Friday morning, Tuhin’s elder brother Selim said, “My brother’s wife and two sons have lost their guardian. Who will take responsibility for them? Why was my brother killed? We demand justice and the immediate arrest of all involved.”
Police say raids are underway to apprehend the identified suspects.
