Snake-bitten Child’s Corpse Floats from India into Kurigram River on Bamboo Raft

The lifeless body of a snake-bitten child was found floating on a bamboo raft in the Dudhkumari River of Kurigram’s Sadar Upazila early Sunday morning. Residents spotted the raft drifting near Garuhara Ghat in Jatrapur Union around 9:30 a.m.

The body, estimated to be of a child around six years old, was wrapped in a sheet, mosquito net, and polythene, with only the face visible. The bamboo raft was made from several banana tree stems, and a note bearing the child’s name, address, and phone number was attached.

Faruk Khan, a college student from the Garuhara area, received a call on the attached number after contacting via WhatsApp. On the other end, a man named Anku Das identified himself as the child’s uncle and revealed that the child died from a snakebite on July 10. Hoping for the child’s new life, the body was set afloat on the river by raft.

Upon learning these details, locals refrained from keeping the body ashore and allowed it to float down the river again.

Jatrapur Union Parishad Chairman Abdul Gofur confirmed the incident and noted that the body was again set afloat by the locals.
