The bloodied body of a Dhaka University student, Sanju Baraik (23), was found early Monday morning under the newly constructed Rabindra Bhaban at Jagannath Hall. Police recovered the body around dawn and sent it to the hospital morgue for autopsy.
Sanju, a student of the Anthropology Department from the 2020-21 academic session, was a resident of Jagannath Hall. His family hails from Chunarughat Upazila in Habiganj district.
Police suspect suicide based on preliminary findings. Officer-in-Charge of Shahbagh Police Station Khalid Munsur stated that CCTV footage showed Sanju falling from the rooftop of the hall building. “However, it’s not yet confirmed whether he jumped or accidentally fell. The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause,” he added.
A Facebook post made by Sanju after 2:30 am on Sunday has raised concerns about his mental state.
In the post, he wrote, “I have realized my mistake. I have disturbed someone day after day… it was not right for me to blame people… I apologize to everyone… The responsibility is solely mine.”
Dhaka University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said, “The body was found lying in a pool of blood. We are trying to reach out to his family.”
Jagannath Hall Principal Debashish Pal mentioned that Sanju had been reportedly struggling with mental health issues in recent times. “His friends informed me about his mental condition. He had been absent from the hall for two days but returned around 4 am today. After about ten minutes, he went up to the rooftop.”
Sanju’s death has left his classmates and teachers shocked. Authorities have assured a thorough investigation to uncover the actual circumstances behind the tragic incident.
