As Bangladesh stepped into the first anniversary month of the July 2024 student uprising, yet another police crackdown on students has shaken the country—this time in Patiya, Chattogram.

The incident began when local students reportedly caught Dipankar Talukder, vice president of Rangamati District Chhatra League, allegedly involved in criminal activity. They handed him over to the police. However, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Patiya Police Station, Zayed Noor, refused to detain him, claiming jurisdiction issues.

As tensions grew and students began chanting the slogans of the July Uprising, OC Zayed Noor allegedly ordered baton charges against the demonstrators. Leaders and activists from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, NCP (Nationalist Coordination Platform), and Chhatra Dal were among those injured. At least seven students were detained.

Later, when more student leaders gathered to protest the arrests and violence, police again resorted to force. Several students are now receiving treatment at local hospitals.

The incident sparked a wave of outrage on social media, where students from across the country are demanding the immediate withdrawal of OC Zayed Noor and justice for police officers involved in last year’s July shootings.
