Nasiruddin Patwary, the candidate for the 11-party electoral alliance in the Dhaka-8 constituency, was once again targeted with eggs during a campaign visit to Habibullah Bahar College in the capital’s Shantinagar area today. The National Patriotic Party (NCP) has directly held BNP candidate Mirza Abbas and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman responsible for the assault.
Incident at the College
The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon when Patwary, the Chief Coordinator of the NCP, arrived at the college as an invited guest for a “Pitha Utshab” (cake festival). According to eyewitnesses and social media footage, as soon as he entered the campus, a group of individuals surrounded him, chanting “Fake, Fake” (Bhua, Bhua) slogans.
As the situation escalated, Patwari and his supporters took shelter on a building veranda. The agitators then began hurling eggs at him in quick succession. In response, NCP activists chanted counter-slogans. Following the commotion, Patwari sat on the road outside the college in protest.
Serious Allegations Against BNP
In a press conference held at the party’s Fakirapool election office later that afternoon, NCP Convener Nahid Islam condemned the attack, calling it a “planned conspiracy.”
“This attack was carried out on the orders of Mirza Abbas and with the consent of Tarique Rahman,” Nahid Islam alleged. “You cannot speak of democracy on stage while using terrorist tactics to suppress opponents in the field. We will not allow the rehabilitation of the old style of politics.”
The NCP leadership also claimed that 12 party activists were injured during the scuffle and demanded immediate action from the Election Commission and college administration.
Recurrence of Attacks
This marks the second such attack on Nasiruddin Patwary in less than a week. Last Friday, he was targeted with dirty water and eggs during a street meeting in the Siddheswari area. While he initially blamed “extortionists” for the first incident, he explicitly pointed to “Chhatra Dal and Mirza Abbas’s private militia” for today’s confrontation.
Police Response
Mohammad Rahat Khan, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ramna Police Station, stated that police personnel were present at the scene and attempted to pacify the agitated crowd.
The Dhaka-8 constituency has become a high-tension zone as Nasiruddin Patwari, representing the youth-led post-uprising alliance, challenges BNP heavyweight Mirza Abbas. The NCP has vowed to give a “befitting reply” through the ballot box on February 12.
