Md. Shakib Mahmud, a student of the 2021–22 session from the Department of International Relations at Dhaka University, is contesting independently for the post of International Affairs Secretary in the upcoming DUCSU election.
In a conversation with Gonotaar, Shakib shared his vision of building bridges between Dhaka University students and the wider world. His campaign centers on expanding opportunities for higher studies abroad, promoting student voices in research collaborations, and fostering stronger regional ties across South Asia.
Speaking on his plans to assist students aiming for higher education overseas, Shakib said:
“I plan to create a network of Dhaka University alumni who are studying or working abroad. Alongside this, I want to establish a dedicated helpdesk under the university administration to guide students pursuing higher education overseas. This helpdesk would host a comprehensive archive and database of scholarships and fellowships, where any student can easily access complete details and application processes.”
On the question of joint research agreements, Shakib emphasized the role of student mandates:
“I firmly believe students’ opinions must be central when it comes to signing joint research agreements. DUCSU, as the elected representative body of students, can play the most crucial role in collecting and voicing these opinions. Through student mandates and active participation, DUCSU can press the administration to ensure that our voices shape these decisions.”
He also highlighted his commitment to regional cooperation and student diplomacy, noting:
“To strengthen regional cooperation, I want to initiate student and cultural exchange programs among South Asian countries. I also propose organizing regional seminars and conferences to bring students together. Building these sincere connections will not only enrich our academic environment but also foster stronger ties between our countries.”
As an independent candidate, Shakib Mahmud believes his vision is rooted in practicality and inclusiveness. His campaign underscores the importance of connecting Dhaka University students with global academic and cultural opportunities, while ensuring their voices remain central in shaping the university’s international policies.
