New Opposition Leaders Announced in 13th National Parliament

In the 13th National Parliament, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has been appointed as the Leader of the Opposition. The party’s Nayeb-e-Ameer, Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher, has been named Deputy Leader of the Opposition, while Nahid Islam, Convener of the National Citizens Party (NCP), has been appointed Opposition Chief Whip.

The decisions were taken on Tuesday following the oath-taking ceremony of Members of Parliament at a parliamentary party meeting.

Saiful Alam Khan (Milon), a Jamaat-e-Islami MP elected from Dhaka-12 constituency, confirmed the matter.

A parliamentary party source said a joint press release from the 11-party alliance will soon formally announce the decisions.

Earlier in the day, Jamaat MPs took the oath around 12:30 pm, followed by the MPs of the NCP. In addition to taking an oath as Members of Parliament, MPs elected under the 11-party electoral alliance also took an oath as members of the Constitutional Reform Council.
