Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’ Secures Nine Oscar Nominations

Guillermo del Toro’s gothic masterpiece Frankenstein

Guillermo del Toro’s long-awaited adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein has emerged as a major contender for the 98th Academy Awards, securing nine nominations. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the shortlist on Thursday, placing the Mexican filmmaker’s gothic masterpiece in several premier categories, including Best Picture.

The film, which Del Toro has described as a lifelong obsession, also earned a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. Rising star Jacob Elordi received his first-ever Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actor for his transformative portrayal of the Creature.

A Half-Century in the Making

For Guillermo del Toro, 61, this project represents the culmination of a dream that began at age 11. The film stars Oscar Isaac as the obsessive Victor Frankenstein, who attempts to defy the laws of nature by creating life from the dead.

Unlike previous adaptations, Del Toro’s version is noted for its “visual and aesthetic compassion,” focusing heavily on the tragic father-son dynamic and the isolation of the Creature. The director has stated his goal was to explore the biographical themes found in Shelley’s wider body of work, such as the impact of war and tyrannical father figures.

The Road to the Dolby Theatre

While Frankenstein entered the awards season with significant momentum, its journey has seen both highs and lows:

  • Golden Globes: The film received five nominations but went home empty-handed, losing to frontrunners One Battle After Another and Hamnet.
  • Critics’ Choice Awards: Jacob Elordi secured a major win for Best Supporting Actor earlier this month, bolstering his chances for the Oscar.
  • Technical Prowess: Beyond the major categories, the film is competing in several technical fields, including Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, and Best Original Score (composed by Alexandre Desplat).
