The proctorial body of Chattogram University (CU) has arrested a man for allegedly operating an illicit liquor manufacturing unit and hunting wild animals within the university campus premises. The individual was detained and subsequently handed over to the police in the early hours of Tuesday morning (yesterday, Monday night).

The arrested person has been identified as Sumon Chakma (50), a resident of Khagrachhari district. He was apprehended around 3:30 AM from the hills adjacent to the Faculty of Biological Sciences. Following the arrest, police filed a case under the Narcotics Control Act and officially registered his arrest.

According to the university administration, Sumon Chakma had leased a parcel of land from the university for the purpose of cultivation. However, under the guise of farming, he established a factory for brewing Cholai Mod (local liquor) and was also engaged in poaching wild animals in the hill area.

The proctorial body increased surveillance after noticing a sudden increase in the movement of outsiders in the area. Based on confirmed intelligence, a raid was conducted at Sumon Chakma’s residence, led by Proctor Professor Hossain Shahid Sarwar, starting at 12:30 AM and concluding around 3:30 AM.

During the operation, officials discovered that Sumon was manufacturing the liquor right next to his small house. The search of the premises, including a long veranda behind his hut, yielded approximately 30 liters of freshly prepared Cholai Mod, along with various tools and equipment used for its production.

Assistant Proctor Nurul Hamid told Gonotaar that Sumon Chakma was handed over to the police late last night. “His lease for the land will be immediately cancelled, and he will be fined for conducting an illegal liquor business and unauthorized tree cutting on the rented land,” he stated.

Monjur Kader Bhuiyan, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hatizari Police Station, confirmed the development. “The police filed a case against Sumon Chakma under the Narcotics Act. He is currently in Hatizari Police custody and will be produced before the court today, Tuesday,” the OC said.
