Leaders and activists of the National Citizen Party (NCP) staged a protest outside the National Parliament building on Thursday morning (12 March), pressing three key demands, including the impeachment of President Mohammed Shahabuddin. The demonstration took place at the entrance of the parliament on Manik Mia Avenue, with NCP spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiya leading the protest.
The three demands put forward by the NCP are:
- Implement constitutional reforms through a public referendum after MPs take the oath of the Constitutional Reform Council.
- Impeach the President.
- Conduct justice for the July Massacre.
Meanwhile, newly elected MPs began arriving at the parliament building from early morning to attend the first session of the 13th National Parliament. Prime Minister Tarek Rahman and opposition leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman were also present. Before joining the session, government MPs expressed their commitment to fulfilling the promises made to the people.
Opposition MPs urged BNP MPs to take the constitutional reform oath and reiterated that the President has no right to participate in the parliamentary session, alleging violation of the oath.
Parliament proceedings officially began around 11 a.m. under the call of President Mohammed Shahabuddin, marking the first session since the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August 2024
