Begum Rokeya Was a Torchbearer of Women’s Awakening: Tarique Rahman

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has described Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain as a pioneer and guiding light of women’s awakening in Bengal and South Asia, on the occasion of her birth and death anniversary.

In a statement issued on Monday, signed by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Tarique Rahman paid deep tribute to the legacy of Begum Rokeya, expressing prayers for the eternal peace of her soul.

“Though she grew up in a deeply conservative family structure, Begum Rokeya emerged as one of the most courageous pioneers of her time. She was a beacon for women’s emancipation,” Tarique Rahman said.

He noted that Begum Rokeya had realised early in life the deep-rooted causes behind the social backwardness of women and firmly believed that education was the foundation of women’s dignity and independence.

“Begum Rokeya elevated women’s education to a position of uniqueness in society and demonstrated that personal growth and individual identity were only possible through knowledge. She took the first initiative to enlighten Muslim women of this region, who were then among the most deprived, with the light of education,” he added.

Tarique Rahman also highlighted the resistance Begum Rokeya faced from ultra-conservative sections of society, stating that her advocacy for women’s liberation drew intense hostility.

“Despite relentless opposition, she remained steadfast, resilient, and unshaken in her mission. Through her sharp pen, she directly confronted the injustice and discrimination inflicted upon women. She embedded women’s autonomy and self-respect at the very core of family life, society, and the economy,” the BNP leader said.

He further stated that Begum Rokeya believed empowerment must be achieved through education and economic self-reliance, adding that she had initiated social movements to ensure women’s independence despite enormous societal barriers.

“At the heart of Begum Rokeya’s philosophy lies women’s true freedom. Her life and ideals will continue to inspire women to become more determined, confident, and self-reliant,” he said.
