Asif Mahmud Stands by His Decisions as Shakib Al Hasan Responds on Social Media

Asif Mahmud stands firm on principle

Yesterday, a social media exchange between youth and sports adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan and Bangladesh cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan captured public attention, revealing tensions over decisions made during last year’s political upheaval.

Around 10 PM, Asif Mahmud posted on Facebook:
“You all cursed me thousands of times for not rehabilitating someone. But I was right. End of discussion.”

The post, while not naming anyone, was widely interpreted as addressing Shakib. Earlier, at 9 PM, Shakib posted a photo with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who remains in exile after the August 5 popular uprising. His message, while celebratory, drew criticism among many for celebrating a figure widely seen as responsible for national crises.

The background to this exchange is significant. During last year’s fall of the government, Shakib was outside the country and could not represent Bangladesh in cricket. Despite being part of the national team, he faced multiple legal cases and controversies, which prevented his return. Attempts to rejoin the team in October were thwarted when he sought to come via Dubai but failed to secure government clearance. Public perception at the time suggested that he prioritized personal political affiliations over national duty.

Many now see Asif Mahmud’s Facebook post as a firm reaffirmation of principle: that leadership sometimes requires making tough decisions, even when unpopular. Later yesterday, around 11:20 PM, Shakib responded on Facebook:
“Finally, someone admitted that because of him, I could no longer wear the Bangladesh jersey or play for my country!”

Shakib concluded with a note hinting at a possible return, but many observers interpreted his post as an attempt to deflect responsibility for his absence from national cricket. In contrast, Asif Mahmud’s position reflects accountability, transparency, and the difficult choices needed to safeguard sports integrity.

The exchange underscores the divide between principled leadership and personal political choices. While Shakib’s actions have raised questions about loyalty and priorities, Asif Mahmud remains firm, emphasizing that decisions for the greater good often require standing alone.
