A four-year-old girl was brutally murdered in Ishwarganj Upazila of Mymensingh, with her body later recovered from inside a kitchen stove at a neighbouring house. The tragic incident took place on Thursday night in Maruakhali village under Sarisha Union.
The victim, Mariyam—nicknamed Siya—was the only child of Mizanur Rahman and Rima Begum.
According to family members and police sources, Mariyam had been missing since the afternoon. After searching for several hours, her lifeless body was discovered inside the stove in the kitchen of a neighbour, Rokeya Begum.
Police were informed immediately and rushed to the scene. The body was recovered and, after the completion of inquest procedures, sent to the morgue of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Family members alleged that Mariyam had been wearing a silver chain around her neck. They claimed that there has been a long-standing issue of drug abuse in the area and suspected that miscreants may have killed the child after snatching the chain to fund their addiction.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rabiul Azam of Ishwarganj Police Station said:
“There are injury marks on the child’s body.”
“A suspect named Yasin (17), son of Saddam from Maruakhali village, has been detained and is being questioned in connection with the incident.”
Police have launched an investigation and are working to uncover the motive behind the killing.
