The medical board treating Mirza Abbas Uddin Ahmed, BNP Standing Committee member and Political Adviser to the Prime Minister, has decided to perform emergency brain surgery at Evercare Hospital in the capital.
The decision was confirmed on Friday (March 13) afternoon by the BNP Health Affairs Secretary, Dr. Rafiqul Islam. He informed reporters that the veteran leader was moved to the operating theater at approximately 3:10 PM following a sudden deterioration in his health.
Sudden Shift in Treatment Plan
While the party had initially planned to fly Mirza Abbas to Singapore via air ambulance at 6:00 PM today for advanced treatment, the medical board opted for immediate intervention after reviewing fresh diagnostic reports.
“He underwent a CT scan on Friday morning. As the reports indicated a worsening condition, a virtual medical board was quickly convened. After a thorough review, the specialists decided that surgery was necessary without further delay. The family’s consent has been obtained,” said Dr. Rafiqul Islam.
High-Level Medical Oversight
The specialized medical board includes some of the country’s most renowned neurosurgeons and physicians, such as:
- Professor Ali Uzzaman Joarder
- Professor Kazi Deen Mohammad
- Professor Shahabuddin Talukder
- Professor Raziul Haque
- Professor Sayed Ahmed
- Professor Kader Sheikh

Prime Minister’s Visit
Earlier in the day, after Jummah prayers, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visited Evercare Hospital to check on the ailing leader. During the visit, the Prime Minister spoke with the medical board and the family of Mirza Abbas, including his wife Afroza Abbas, to receive a detailed briefing on his clinical status.
Mirza Abbas was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday night (March 11) after he suddenly lost consciousness while breaking his fast during Iftar. He has since been under close observation in the Neuro ICU.
The family and party leadership have requested the people of Bangladesh to pray for his successful surgery and speedy recovery.
