Hospital Storekeeper Arrested for Smuggling Government Medicines and Equipment in Kurigram

Police have arrested Faruk Ahmed (43), a storekeeper at Roumari Upazila Health Complex, for smuggling government medicines and medical equipment. The arrest took place on Monday night (March 9) at 9:00 pm at a courier service booking office in the Collegepara, Master Colonypara area.

According to police sources, earlier in the day, Faruk Ahmed removed around 40,000 metronidazole tablets and 18 weighing scales from the health complex. By evening, he took these items to a courier office in Collegepara, preparing to send them to Dhaka for sale.

Acting on confidential information, police raided the courier office and seized the stolen medicines and equipment. Interrogation and booking details revealed that the items were intended for a buyer in the Mitford area, Babubazar, Dhaka.

Ariful Islam Khan, a local operator at the courier service, said that Faruk Ahmed brought the parcels to be sent to Dhaka. Upon inspection, the packages were found to contain free government medicines and weighing scales. Authorities were informed immediately.

Abdus Samad, Roumari Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, confirmed that the seized medicines and scales belong to the health complex and the matter has been reported to higher authorities.

Kousar Ali, Officer-in-Charge of Roumari Police Station, said the storekeeper was arrested along with the stolen items, and preparations are underway to file a case.
