The U.S. Department of Defense has confirmed that an Iranian warship was sunk by a U.S. submarine torpedo in the Indian Ocean, resulting in at least 80 deaths. U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth announced during a briefing at the Pentagon on Wednesday.
The vessel, a frigate reportedly operating in international waters off Sri Lanka, was believed to be safe before the attack, according to Hegseth.
“A U.S. submarine has sunk an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean, a vessel that thought it was safe in international waters,” said Hegseth.
He further warned that the attack on Iran is only the beginning of a larger campaign by U.S. and Israeli forces, aiming for full control of Iranian airspace within a week of operations.
The Defense Secretary also noted that additional troops are being deployed in the Middle East, and emphasized that the U.S. would take all necessary time to ensure complete success, quoting President Donald Trump:
“We will take as much time as necessary to ensure success.”
The incident marks a significant escalation in regional tensions following recent military operations by the United States and Israel against Iranian targets.
