According to a statement issued by the Home Ministry on Sunday (February 22), a decision has been approved to withdraw 1,006 cases filed over the past 17 years against opposition leaders and activists. The minister said the cases were politically driven.
Speaking to journalists after a meeting with Prime Minister Tarek Rahman at the Secretariat, the Home Minister also said changes would be made at the top levels of the police administration, to be implemented in phases.
Regarding the first session of the 13th National Parliament, he said it is scheduled to begin on March 12, and the government will recommend the matter to the President. Under the Constitution, the President must convene the first session of a new parliament within 30 days of the publication of the election gazette.
The minister added that, following the Prime Minister’s advice, the President will summon the first session, where the Speaker and Deputy Speaker will be elected. Ordinances issued during the interim government period will also be placed before Parliament. The President is expected to deliver an address at the inaugural session.
