Sherpur-3 Election Postponed Following Death of Jamaat Candidate

The Election Commission (EC) has announced the cancellation of the 13th National Parliamentary Election for the Sherpur-3 (Sreebardi-Jhenaigati) constituency following the death of Mohammad Nuruzzaman, the candidate from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.

Mohammad Nuruzzaman, popularly known as Mohammad Nuruzzaman Badal, passed away at approximately 3:00 AM on Wednesday while undergoing treatment for kidney-related complications at a hospital. He was serving as the Secretary of the Sherpur district unit of Jamaat-e-Islami.

The news of his demise was confirmed via a post on the verified Facebook page of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami at 3:24 AM today.

EC to Announce New Schedule

Speaking on the matter Wednesday morning, Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud stated that under the Representation of the People Order (RPO), the election for a constituency must be cancelled if a contesting candidate dies.

“According to the RPO, the election for Sherpur-3 is now considered cancelled. The Election Commission will announce a fresh schedule for this seat in due course,” the Commissioner confirmed.

Background

The 13th National Parliamentary Election and a national referendum are scheduled to take place across the country on February 12. While polling will proceed in other constituencies, the voters of Sreebardi and Jhenaigati will now have to wait for the revised date to cast their ballots for their parliamentary representative.

Mohammad Nuruzzaman’s death has cast a shadow of grief over the local political arena, and his party colleagues have expressed deep condolences over the loss of the veteran organizer.
