Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has alleged that a series of coordinated cyberattacks targeting the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of its Ameer, Shafiqur Rahman, and other senior leaders originated from government sources and the Presidential office.
At an emergency press conference held at the party’s central office on Sunday, Jamaat leaders claimed that the breach was an act of “sabotage” intended to tarnish the party’s image and requested the immediate intervention of the Election Commission (EC) for a fair investigation.
Allegations of Official Sabotage
Mahmudur Rahman, a member of Jamaat’s election management committee, presented a detailed technical report during the conference. He alleged that tracing the cyberattacks revealed a disturbing pattern.
“Most of the phishing and junk emails used in these attacks originated from government office sources. Even official addresses from the Presidential office were used to send junk mail. This appears to be a deliberate act of sabotage,” Mahmudur Rahman stated.
He further noted that the attacks have intensified over the past month, targeting not only the Ameer but also senior leaders Shafique Ullah Masud and Delwar Hossain.
Controversial Post and Party Clarification
The press conference followed a controversial post shared from the Ameer’s X handle on Saturday afternoon, which contained derogatory remarks about women’s participation in the workforce. The party quickly regained control of the account and deleted the post, clarifying that it was “falsely attributed” to Shafiqur Rahman by the hackers.
Ehsanul Mahboob Zubair, Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary General, addressed the issue of women’s rights during the briefing. “The thoughts of Jamaat-e-Islami regarding women have always been clearly articulated in the Ameer’s official statements. Such thoughts cannot be changed or misrepresented through cyberattacks,” he said.
He added that the party is taking legal action and will formally approach the Election Commission to ensure a level playing field ahead of the upcoming general elections.
Call for Election Commission Action
The party leaders emphasized that as the constitutional body responsible for a fair election, the EC must take strong measures against such digital interference. Sirajul Islam, another member of the election committee and former central president of Islami Chhatra Shibir, stated that multiple attempts were made to seize control of several official pages to spread misinformation.
Jamaat-e-Islami has already filed a General Diary (GD) with the Hatirjheel Police Station regarding the hacking incident.
