‘Others Wake Up and Remember God; One Candidate Wakes Up Only to Name Me,’ Says Mirza Abbas

Mirza Abbas

Mirza Abbas, BNP Standing Committee member and the party’s candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency, has criticized his electoral opponents for engaging in personal attacks rather than following political decorum.

While conducting a public outreach program in the capital’s Shantinagar area on Friday, the veteran politician urged new candidates to maintain the law and refrain from character assassination.

On Personal Attacks and Decorum

Reflecting on the nature of the current campaign, Mirza Abbas noted a sharp departure from traditional political rivalry.

“Usually, people wake up in the morning and remember the name of Almighty Allah through prayer. But there is a candidate here who wakes up and immediately starts taking my name,” he remarked.

He shared that throughout his long political career, he has faced much “tougher and more formidable” opponents, yet they maintained a level of mutual respect. “We never engaged in such mudslinging against each other,” he added, expressing concern over the “foul language” and “provocations” being used by his current rivals.

Allegations of Election Engineering

During his interaction with journalists at the Eastern Plus Market, Mirza Abbas alleged that a “special group” is desperately trying to manipulate the election results to favor certain individuals.

“The current situation seems stable, but I do not know what lies ahead,” he cautioned. “The movements and behavior of some candidates suggest they are attempting ‘election engineering.’ There is a clear effort to change the results, and some are acting as if they are ‘mad’ to ensure the victory of specific people.”

Commitment to the People

Despite the challenges, the former minister expressed his firm belief in the wisdom of the voters. He stated that the public’s excitement and emotion surrounding the election would be reflected on February 12.

Campaign Trail Highlights:

  • Public Outreach: Conducted mass contact at Shantinagar Market and Pir Saheber Gali.
  • Inclusion: Attended a program at the Purana Paltan School for the Deaf.
  • Community Engagement: Scheduled a meeting with the apartment owners of Chamelybagh Green Peace to discuss his electoral vision.

Mirza Abbas concluded by reiterating his respect for the people’s mandate, stating that he remains calm despite attempts to “incite” him, as he has “faced many elections” throughout his life.
